Case
Those familiar with the ThinkPad X100e should know exactly what to expect from the chassis of the X120e. ( battery apple a1185 ) While the casing is made of plastic and lacks a roll cage, the overall matte shell is surprisingly stiff, which gives an excellent sense of thickness and heft to the build. It may not be as tough as the magnesium alloy construct of the more expensive ThinkPads, but the X120e definitely ranks high amongst other netbooks in its size class.( hp 452057-001 ) Applying pressure on the center of the lid is the only location where even a hint of depression can be done. Additionally, the hinges attaching the screen to its main base are quite sturdy as well,( sony vgp-bps13b/b battery ) but the monitor portion will inevitably vibrate slightly if the notebook is being used during bus or car rides.

Due to the two touchpad buttons on the bottom edge center of the notebook, ( sony vgp-bps13b/s battery ) there is no latch for closing the screen and care should be taken when opening the lid. As mentioned in our X100e review,( battery VGP-BPS13 ) the user can accidentally attempt to open the display from the gap between the touchpad keys and the base instead of the gap between the touchpad keys and the lid.

The main blemish in the case design, however, is its protruding 10.8V 6-cellbattery module on the rear side. Models equipped with the smaller 3-cell battery will not have this issue.

At 3.3 pounds (1.5kg) and 1-inch (2.54cm) thickness, the notebook is quite compact, ( battery sony VGP-BPS13A/B ) but is a little thicker and heavier than one would expect. The overall build quality more than makes up for the additional girth, however.
In addition to having all the physical connectivity options of the X100e, the ThinkPad X120e manages to squeeze in more.( dell vostro 1520 battery ) The back side offers a VGA-out port on one end and an AC adapter jack on the other. Like many laptops, the VGA port does not provide screw recesses for securing the video cable.

The right hand side includes a 4-in-1 card reader (SD/MMC/MS/MSpro) ( hp Compaq CQ42 battery ) and an always-on USB 2.0 port near the front edge, while the farthest edge houses a second USB 2.0 port. The only noteworthy issue with the keyboard layout is the design of the small directional arrow keys. ( hp probook 4710s battery ) Those with larger fingers can easily press on both the up and down keys simultaneously by accident, and the adjacent PgUp and PgDn keys are more deeply recessed into the frame, which makes them offer a bit less of a tactile feedback when pressed. Otherwise, the entirety of the keyboard retains its velvety feel and unmistakable ThinkPad style and ease of use.

Touchpad

The familiar Trackpoint makes itself at home between the G,( hp Compaq 8510W battery ) H and B keys and stands out more than usual due to the smaller size of the overall keyboard. The UltraNav touchpad deserves similar praise to the keyboard, but we wish it could have been a little bit taller at only 2.95-inches (7.5cm) wide and 1.33-inches (3.4cm) deep, ( ibm Thinkpad T61 Battery ) especially since multi-touch gestures are supported. The surrounding buttons are integrated for both touchpad and Trackpoint use, while the center button allows for vertical document and webpage scrolling as needed. As expected, both the touchpad and Trackpoint have excellent accuracy and responsiveness.

Ist das HP ProBook 4530s mit einem Preis von rund 700 Euro (UVP) auch ein heißer Preis-Leistungs-Tipp?
Bereits Ende März konnten wir auf einem Presseevent die 2011er HP Business Notebook-Serien begutachten.( Dell M1530 Akku ) Darunter auch das neue HP ProBook 4530s mit mattem 15,6-Zoll-Bildschirm (1366 x 768 Pixel) und vor allem einem neuen Gehäusedesign. Neben dem großflächigem Einsatz von gebürstetem Aluminium dominiert eine schlichte Farbgebung das grundsätzlich moderne Aussehen. Im Vergleich zu den Vorgängern sind jetzt alle Oberflächen matt gehalten.( akku Apple A1175 ) 

Mit einem Intel Core i3-2310M (2,1 GHz),( Akku Dell inspiron 6400 ) der integrierten Intel GMA HD 3000 Grafik, 320 GByte Festplattenspeicher und 4 GByte DDR3-Arbeitsspeicher haben wir uns das neue Low Cost Modell HP ProBook 4530s-XX968EA in die Redaktion geholt. Dazu sei gesagt, dass von HP momentan vier Modelle mit unterschiedlichen Komponenten anbietet. Neben verschiedenen Betriebssystemen stehen diverse Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs (Maximum: Intel Core i7-2620M), ein hochauflösenderes Display,( Akku Apple A1185 ) UMTS und beispielsweise ein Blu-ray-Brenner zur Auswahl.

Ein Blick auf die HP-Modellbezeichnung zeigt, ( Sony VGP-BPS2 akku )dass das Kürzel s im Namen für kurze Plattformzyklen von 9 bis 12 Monaten steht und werksseitig nur eine 12-monatige Garantielaufzeit gewährt wird. Andererseits kann damit die übliche Preisspanne um 700 bis 800 Euro gehalten werden.( Akku Acer 5920G ) Mit Linux OS und abgespeckter Ausstattung geht es aber auch schon ab rund 450 Euro in die Businessklasse.

Der erste Eindruck zählt!(Akku VGP-BPS13b/q ) Das HP ProBook 4530s ist das erste Gerät mit neuem Gewand in unserer Redaktion. Die schlichte Farbgebung der Aluminiumoberflächen gepaart mit dezentem Lack sowie die hochwertige Haptik gefallen auf Anhieb. HP selbst spricht dabei werbewirksam von einem abnutzungssicherem Design. Ein Wundermittel sind die Einlagen aus gebürstetem Aluminium nicht, aber Fingerabdrücke, Staub und Katzer haben im alltäglichen Gebrauch kaum eine Chance.( HP Compaq CQ42 akku ) Erfreulich ist die Tatsache, dass nun endlich auch der Tastaturuntergrund matt lackiert wurde. Bei den Vorgängern war dies ein Kritikpunkt, der nicht recht ins Bild passen wollte.

Die Verarbeitung hinterlässt einen soliden Eindruck und auch im Detail konnten wir keine Schnitzer finden.( Compaq CQ60 Akku ) Andererseits besteht das Gehäuse zum Großteil aus einfachem Kunststoff, der im Vergleich nicht sehr widerstandsfähig ist. Business-Notebooks des gehobenen Preissegmentes können mit hochwertigen Metall-Legierungen oder Verbundmaterialen aufwarten. Im puncto Stabilität bleibt kein Anlass für Kritik.( akku VGP-BPS9A/S ) Selbst bei punktuellem Druck ist kaum ein Unterschied zu erkennen. Nur das Mash-Gitter über der Tastatur sollte nicht zu stark beansprucht werden, da es sonst unschöne Dellen davonträgt. Der Displaydeckel lässt sich sichtbar verwinden, wobei die Aluminium-Auflage dies ab einem gewissen Punkt begrenzt und damit einen Riss im Panel vorbeugt. Positiv ist die Druckstabilität des Deckels. Gehalten wird dieser von zwei wuchtigen Scharnieren, die bei einem straffen Halt nur leicht nachwippen.( Sony VGP-BPS13a/q Akku ) Zu beachten: Trotz entsprechendem Aussehen handelt es sich nicht um hochwertige Displayscharniere aus Vollmetall. Der Kunststoff ist nur mit jeweils einer Blende versehen.

Auch die Gehäuseunterseite hat sich zum Positiven verändert. ( acer aspire 7740 Akku ) Über eine große Wartungsabdeckung, die von zwei Schrauben unter dem Akku gehalten wird, ist nahezu das gesamte Innenleben erreichbar.(Akku VGP-BPS13/b ) Im Bereich des Arbeitsspeichers liegt laut HP-Produktseite das Maximum bei 8 GByte auf zwei Bänken. Die 2,5-Zoll-Festplatte befindet sich im vorderen Bereich und der Austausch gegen eine schnellere Lösung wäre schnell erledigt.

Die gebotene Anschlussausstattung des 4530s hinterlässt einen guten Eindruck. ( Akku Acer Aspire 3680 ) Neben den heute üblichen drei USB-2.0-Ports, einem HDMI- und VGA-Ausgang sind auch ein ExpressCard 34 Einschub sowie USB-3.0-Anschluss vorhanden, der nur durch die Abkürzung für „Super Speed“ zu erkennen ist. Im Vergleich zum Vorgänger entfällt bei der aktuellen Ausführung der eSATA-Komboport und damit gleich zwei Schnittstellen (eSATA und ein weiterer USB-2.0-Port). ( VGP-BPS13b/b Akku ) An dessen Stelle findet sich nun eine RJ-11-Buchse, die heute nur noch äußerst selten zu finden ist.

Die Aufteilung der Ports beschränkt sich leider nur auf die Seiten des Notebooks, ( Akku VGP-BPS13B/S ) wobei die frontlastige Verteilung der Schnittstellen negativ auffällt. Neben raschem Kabelsalat ist unter Umständen auch die Nutzung einer externen Maus beeinträchtigt. Ein weiterer Kritikpunkt ist die niedrige Positionierung des Einschubs für Erweiterungskarten (ExpressCard 34). Viele dieser Steckkarten blockieren bei Benutzung die zwei ( Dell Inspiron 9400 Akku ) USB-Anschlüsse sowie den HDMI-Ausgang an der linken Geräteseite.

Bei den Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten bleiben keine Wünsche offen und in allen Bereichen wird der aktuelle Stand der Technik geboten. ( Dell Latitude D630 Akku ) Neben Gigabit-Ethernet sind WLAN nach 802.11n sowie die Nahfunk-Technologie Bluetooth 3.0 +HS an Bord. Gegen Aufpreis ist auch ein 3G-UMTS-Modul vom Typ „HP Ic2010“ für das ProBook 4530s erhältlich. Der notwendige Platz dafür ist bereits angelegt, der notwendige Sockel sowie die Antennen fehlen aber, ( Akku Acer Aspire 5100 ) wodurch ein nachträglicher Einbau nicht möglich ist.

Der Lieferumfang ist kostenorientiert ausgerichtet und es wird nur das Nötigste geboten. Neben dem Gerät selbst ist ein 65 Watt Netzteil mit Netzkabel, ein 6-Zellen-Akku mit 47 Wattstunden sowie gedruckte Dokumentationen enthalten. ( akku dell vostro 1710 ) Optional bietet HP einiges an Zubehör. Darunter beispielsweise ein großer Akku mit 9 Zellen und 93 Wattstunden, Portreplikatoren, Taschen und ein externes Laufwerk. Ähnlich verhält es sich bei der vorinstallierten Software. ( Sony VGP-BPS22A Akku ) Neben Microsoft Office 2010 Starter sind zahlreiche Freeware-Programme sowie die übliche Testversion eines Anti-Viren Schutzes im Paket enthalten.

Mit einer Garantielaufzeit von nur 12 Monaten mit Bring-In-Service bewegt sich die Service-Leistung im unteren Bereich.( Akku Sony VGP-BPS22 ) Die hochpreisigeren Business-Notebooks von HP kommen im Vergleich mit einem Standard von 36 Monaten.( Sony VGP-BPS8A Akku ) Auch viele Consumer-Notebooks bieten meist ein besseres Paket samt Pick-up & Return-Service. Gegen Aufpreis lässt sich die Garantie des Testgerätes auf maximal 60 Monate erweitern.

Passend zum neuen Design hat nun endlich auch die Tastatur eine Auffrischung erfahren.( Sony VGP-BPS8 Akku ) Bei gleicher Tastenbeschriftung wirkt das Chiclet-Style Layout sehr aufgeräumt und großzügig. Im Vergleich zum Vorgänger mit Edge-to-Edge Design ist das Eingabegerät nun im Gehäuse einlassen, wirkt aber dennoch großzügig. Bei einer Tastengröße von 15 x 15 Millimetern hat sogar noch ein vollwertiger Ziffernblock platz,( Akku VGP-BPS13A/B ) ohne das es zu stören Sparmaßnahmen gekommen ist. Lediglich die Pfeiltasten wurde in ihren Abmessungen ein wenig beschnitten.

Die Tasten bieten bei einem kurzen Hubweg einen sehr deutlichen Druckpunkt.( Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Akku ) Insgesamt ist das subjektive Gefühl gut, wobei die straffe Auslegung der Tasten und das damit ein wenig ruckelige Tippen gefallen muss. Der sehr stabile Untergrund ist aber als ein positives Merkmal hervorzuheben. Die gebotenen Fn-Funktionen setzen sich durch kleine Symbole von den restlichen Tasten sichtbar ab.( Akku VGP-BPS9 ) Auf Zusatztasten oberhalb der Tastatur verzichtet HP größtenteils. Zwei kleine Tasten für das Starten des Internetbrowsers sowie die Verwaltung der Mobiltechnologien erscheinen aber sinnvoll und passen gut in das Bild. Eine optionale Tastaturhintergrundbeleuchtung hätte den guten Eindruck abgerundet.

Touchpad

Das Touchpad ist gewachsen und bietet bei Abmessungen von 93 x 53 Millimetern (B x H) und einer nutzbaren Diagonale von 10,6 Zentimetern eine angenehme Oberfläche mit guten Gleiteigenschaften. Das Gerät von Synaptics nennt sich LuxPad V7.5 und unterstützt Multi-Touch Gesten.（Akku Sony VGP-BPS9/B ） Die altbewährten Scrollbalken am Rand sind nicht vorhanden und lassen sich auch nicht über die Einstellungen aktivieren. Andererseits ist das Arbeiten mit den Gesten recht problemlos möglich. Die Mausersatztasten sind in der passenden Farbe lackiert und die physikalische Trennung gefällt. Auch der klare Druckpunkt, （VGP-BPS9/S Akku ） der kurze Hub sowie die geringe Geräuschentwicklung sind Pluspunkte.

Honeycomb Alternative! ( vgp-bps13b/s Battery ) Acer’s tablet presence has so far been fairly restrained, but is beginning to gain more and more traction with every new model. The Iconia Tab A500 offers an Nvidia Tegra 250 multi-core CPU/GPU, 32 GB of memory, a high resolution WXGA display, ( ibm Thinkpad T61 Battery ) and the brand new Android 3.0 operating system. What can be expected from the slim 500 Euro device was tested by us.

This can actually only be good for the quality of the products, since this can provide for a good basis, whereby it is possible to learn from the mistakes of others. The Iconia Tab W500, which runs Windows 7, AMD-Fusion, and an interesting docking concept. And the Iconia Tab A500 in our review, which despite of the similar name, is equipped with an Nvidia Tegra 250 and runs the new Android 3.0, and thus ventures an entirely different way.( hp probook 4710s battery ) Our tested model is currently available from about 490 Euros, and thus only lies a fraction below the RRP of 499 Euros.

Inaccurate manufacturingThe case of the Iconia Tab A500 has stylish similarities with the Iconia Tab W500. The aluminum look on the back, chrome colored operating buttons, and the large black display frame with the WXGA display.( hp Compaq CQ40 Battery ) The rigidity of the case is very good, the materials are solid, and the robustness of the surfaces is in line with the usual sensitive standard thanks to the glossy display. What’s not so convincing is the precision of manufacturing. This may only become apparent when looking in detail, ( hp Compaq 8510W battery ) but the badly aligned components are certainly not beautiful.( HP 6545B Battery ) The iPad makes a generally high quality and robust impression in this case, thanks to the unibody case and the glass display surface.

The big advantage of our tested candidate compared to the previously tested W500, ( lenovo Thinkpad T60 Battery ) is the lighter weight of 750g, which is almost 200g less. Holding this without support is possible for a relatively long time,( ibm 40Y6795 ) whereby the lightness of the iPad 2 with 601g is not quite reached. The AC adapter is also very light with a further 120g, and can also be tucked away neatly thanks to the removable plug. More on the theme of cases can be read in our comparison of different tablets.

The available interfaces barely provide the standard sizes, but instead require micro-variants.( battery hp probook 4510s ) A regular USB 2.0 port is the exception to this. The transfer of data is therefore better carried out via a cable or a USB stick. We were able to transfer pictures, videos, and music without problems using a USB stick, or data transfer cable from a PC and from an external hard drive. A simultaneous use of both of the USB ports is only possible with narrow USB cables, since the distance between the two is very close at 3 mm.

The big disadvantage of Android and iOs compared to Windows tablets,( battery sony VGP-BPS13 ) is the missing usability of common USB peripheral devices, such as DVB-T sticks, DVD drives, or UMTS sticks.( vgp-bps13/b battery ) In these cases it is either necessary to resort to expensive specialty solutions, such as for example Equinux` tizi DVB-T or WLAN hotspot for iOs, or to completely omit these options. One 2 MP front camera for video telephony, and one 5 MP camera with autofocus and flash on the back for taking pictures. The accessories for the Iconia Tab A500 are easy to oversee.( apple a1185 battery ) These primarily include a docking station with a remote control (LC.DCK0A.001) for about 70 Euros, and a special protective case which functions as a holder (LC.BAG0A.011) for about 35 Euros. Mittig kann selbiger mühelos eingedrückt werden. Nicht anders das Chassis. Ein Kabelbaum zu beiden Seiten schlängelt sich über den Schreibtisch und behindert die Ablage einer Maus - egal an welcher Seite. Rückseitige Anschlüsse wären praktischer, es gibt aber keine.

WLAN der schnellsten Generation bietet die Funkkarte nach Draft-N Standard ( Akku Compaq presario CQ60 ) (Atheros AR9285). Ein integriertes Bluetooth-Modul gibt es nicht. Der LAN-Adapter von Realtek kommuniziert passend in Gigabit-Manier.

User Interface and Features

Buffalo’s web-based interface is a model of simplicity. Along the left side is a menu that lets you view the drive by content type (Movies, Music, and Photos), or by when it was uploaded to the drive. Content is arranged by the date it was created, but a search box at the top lets you find content by name.(HP Compaq 8510W Battery)

As you upload content to the drive, it automatically creates thumbnails of each file, so it’s easy to see what they are at a glance. Even better, if you mouse over a video, it will start playing in its window. At the bottom of each thumbnail are icons that let you preview, download, delete, or share the file. All of this makes navigating the drive so easy that we hardly used the desktop app again. Although Iomega’s web-based interface also creates thumbnails, its more traditional file-tree organization feels less friendly.(HP Compaq 8510P Battery)

It’s easy to share files, too; simply click the green Share icon at the bottom of a file or folder, and enter the e-mail addresses of those you’d like to share the file(s) with; you can even publish the files to Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace.(HP ProBook 6545B Battery)

The CloudStor has some other neat features, including the ability to create slideshows by dragging and dropping photos or videos, and even setting them to music. As with individual files, you can then share the slideshow with others by entering their e-mail addresses. Design

Measuring 8.1 x 5.1 x 3.4 inches, the CloudStor is about twice as thick as the Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive, but that’s because the Buffalo device can accommodate two 3.5-inch drives. Ours came with a single 2TB drive, but the front face removes easily if you want to add a second one. As befitting a device that’s designed to blend in with the rest of your tech, the CloudStor is all black, with three small blue status lights on the front.(hp elitebook 8740w battery)

Around back is a power plug, Ethernet port, and a USB 2.0 port should you want to add another external drive, or network a printer.

Apps

All of this combines to make one of the most user-friendly NAS drives out there, but Buffalo goes one step further with its free mobile app (for Android, BlackBerry, iOS, and webOS). Just be sure to download the PogoPlug app, not the Buffalo WebAccess app. We used the iPad app for our testing.(hp elitebook 8540p battery)

Once we signed into the PogoPlug app on our iPad, we browsed our movies, music, and photos just as we could on our desktop. The app also lets you download content to, and upload content from, your mobile device. It’s a neat way to virtually expand the size of your tablet or phone’s storage.(toshiba pa3356u-1brs battery)

We did encounter a few glitches, though. We couldn’t view the slideshow we’d created via the app, and when we would open the Settings menu, we couldn’t close it, no matter what button we pressed. We had to relaunch the app to close the menu.(toshiba pa3356u-1bas battery)

Leaving the recent defective Sandy bridge issues behind, Intel is reportedly nearing shipping of the new generation Sandy bridges that are supposed to utilize significantly lower voltage than their larger counterparts. The first of these processors should be the Core i7 2657M, that runs on a clock speed of only 1.6GHz but can achieve up to 2.7GHz (2.4 GHz with both cores loaded) thanks to the Turbo boost technology. This, along with the somewhat slower 1.4GHz Core i5 2537M should start shipping in the spring of this year, and in all possibilities, Intel might target this year’s Computex happening at Taipei from May 31st. Consumer Reports award best tablet crown to iPad 2

Even with the growing number of tablet manufacturers this year, none are apparently putting up as good of a fight so far compared to Apple’s latest iPad according to a recent review from Consumer Reports.

The well-respected monthly American magazine has tested and ranked currently available tablets on 17 different criteria, and the iPad 2 was the clear winner. “Apple is leading the tablet market in both quality and price, which is unusual for a company whose products are usually premium-priced,” said Consumer Reports editor Paul Reynolds. This claim indicates a very important position that Apple holds in the tablet market, as the iPad 2 can be bought brand new and contract-free for under $500, much lower than many other high-end tablets. This low price has also recently intimidated Samsung and its upcoming 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab. In addition, its graphics performance is unmatched when compared to tablets with Nvidia’s Tegra 2 APU. Ranked at second place was none other than the Motorola Xoom, which was praised for its built-in memory card reader and Adobe Flash support. Perhaps more surprising, however, was that the Xoom tied second with the original iPad. By the end of the year, this list could be revised as other major companies begin to show what they have to offer. Dell is about to add a new addition to its line of Streak tablets for a fall release.

First mentioned in a briefing back in February, the 10-inch Windows 7 tablet should be appearing sometime this September at the earliest, according to sources from Forbes. The upcoming tablet would be Dell’s first 10-inch tablet, as the company currently only offers 5-inch and 7-inch variants of its Streak tablet.(dell vostro 1400 battery)

Judging from the leaked Dell roadmap last month, the 10-inch Windows 7 tablet would be releasing quite closely to the possible Windows 8 tablet that is reportedly scheduled for Q1 2012. But since other companies such as HP and Asus have already released Windows 7 tablets, Dell may be deciding to introduce a Windows 7 tablet of its own as well. Current Streak models ship only with Android OS, so the new 10-inch tablet this fall would be Dell’s first to run Windows.(VGP-BPS13AS)

Forbes was also tipped with another 10-inch tablet coming from Dell for the summer, this time expected to run Android if released. Whether or not the tablet would be part of the Streak lineup is currently unknown, as the source claims the tablet is considered “unbranded” for now.(VGP-BPS13/S)

It’s been close to 3 weeks since we last heard about the Alienware M14x and M18x, but thanks to a recent review by Chinese tech-website zol.com, the M14x picture has gotten a lot clearer. According to the first part of the review, the M14x appears to have received the same Sandy Bridge upgrades as its M11x and the M17x counterparts and will also come with NVIDIA graphics. Unfortunately, there is now word about the 18″ Alienware laptop yet.(Akku HP Compaq 8710P)

Dell’s Alienware laptops have usually offered top of the line performance and the M14x looks to be the same. According to the review, the laptop will be powered by a Sandy Bridge Core i7-2820QM processor, an NVIDIA GT555M GPU, and up to a 750GB 7200RPM hard drive. The 14” laptop will come with a 1366×768 pixel resolution display and 2GB of RAM but can be upgraded to feature a Full HD (1920×1080 pixel) display and 4GB of RAM. Of course, no Alienware laptop is complete without neon lighting for the keyboard and speakers, and the M14x doesn’t appear to have been spared. The notebook should be available in Red and Black Nebula colors and will also have Klipsch speakers similar to the M17x.(Akku HP Compaq 8510P)

For those that may find the M11x too small and the M17x too big, Dell should be providing an alternative option in the M14x. New study shows frustration amongst developers over Android fragmentation

A Q1 2011 study conducted by Baird venture capitalist William Powers surveyed 250 active app developers on their general experiences with the Android and iOS platforms. In short, 86% of respondents found the fragmentation of Google’s Android to be anywhere between somewhat problematic and extremely problematic.(Akku HP Pavilion DM4)

According to Powers, iOS is the preferred platform for app development due to its ease of development, recognition, unified App Store, and profitability.

The Android fragmentation means developers must take into account the myriad of Android-equipped devices in the market, and what these devices are and are not capable of. Optimizing apps for the different processors, available RAM, screen sizes, and graphics chips are all additional challenges that developers face when programming Android apps. This is in comparison to the ease of developing for the Apple iOS, where much fewer types of devices are involved.(Akku HP Pavilion DM4T)

Additionally, some Android apps just cannot run on certain devices if those models are unable to update to higher versions. Even though Android commands a large percentage of the mobile market, Over 30% of those users are still using Android 2.1 or lower as of April 1 2011, according to Android.com. Several game developers have also been concerned over Android’s inconsistency when deciding on which platforms to develop for. Infinity Blade, for example, appears on Apple’s App Store but is currently nowhere to be found on Android for a reason. “When a consumer gets the phone and they wanna play a game that uses our technology, it’s got to be a consistent experience, and we can’t guarantee that [on Android],” said Epic Games programmer Tim Sweeney in a Gizmodo interview.(Akku HP CQ42 )

Google has so far been attempting to reduce further Android fragmentation levels by withholding the source code for Android 3.0. Design

Measuring 11.5 x 2.8 x 2 inches and weighing 1.4 pounds, the Visioneer Mobility scanner is slightly smaller than the Visioneer Strobe 500 (11.7 x 2.8 x 3.3, 2.2 pounds), but it lacks the bulky docking station of the latter. The Mobility’s length means it won’t fit in any but the largest of handbags, but it will easily slip into a backpack or any piece of carry-on luggage.(HP Compaq 8510P Battery)

We like the sleek but simple design of the Mobility. The top is a glossy white plastic, while the underside is matte black. Combined with its long and thin dimensions, the black-and-white color scheme lends the portable scanner a fashionable, if not high-end, look. Some might not like that the Visioneer logo and the product name are located in the center of the scanner’s lid.(HP ProBook 6545B Battery)

The Visioneer Mobility has two buttons: one for powering the device on and off, and one for toggling between the scanner’s three modes. Both buttons are located on the Mobility’s glossy white top. Around back are an SD card slot, a miniUSB port, and a USB port. Visioneer includes a 2GB SD card with the scanner. While this is helpful, frequent scanners will need to invest in more storage space.(hp elitebook 8740w battery)

Performance

The Mobility scans items between 2 x 2 inches and 8.5 x 11.7 inches. The scanner offers three output modes: black and white or color PDFs at 300 dpi, or color JPEGs at 300 dpi. By comparison, the Visioneer Strobe 500 can output scans to BMP, JPG, PDF, sPDF, and TIFF formats. The Mobility scanner can only take one sheet of paper at a time, which means scanning longer documents could be an ordeal. There’s also no duplexer, so double-sided pages will need to be scanned twice. Visioneer says the Mobility can scan approximately 300 color 8.2 x 11.7-inch pages per battery charge.(hp elitebook 8540p battery)

In our hands-on time with the Mobility, it operated smoothly. It took 8 seconds to scan a 8.5 x 11 document and 9.5 seconds to scan an 8.5 x 11 color photo. Scanning a business card took just 6 seconds, which is on a par with the Strobe 500, and the scanner had no trouble detecting items of any size.(toshiba pa3356u-1brs battery)

Quality varied depending on the document scanned. Black-and-white text pages came out accurately. A color PDF scan of the Visioneer instruction manual had slightly muted, bluer tones than the original, but offered plenty of detail. Our scanned business card contained the correct colors, though we noticed some streaking. Scanning images in black and white was another story: A color image of a car on a highway was almost impossible to make out, as the scanned copy came out mostly black. Scanning this same picture in color gave us much better results; the image was much more detailed, though the colors appeared slightly washed out.(toshiba pa3356u-1bas battery)

Verdict

The $199 Visioneer Mobility scanner lives up to its name: At 1.4 pounds, it can fit in your carry-on to serve all your on-the-go scanning needs. Moreover, the Mobility is extremely easy to use, with no software required and only three modes to choose from. Those who need to scan full-size photos or longer documents will be better served by the Visioneer Strobe 500 ($349), which includes a duplexer and an optional dock with a paper feed. But for those on the go who just want a hard copy of simple items such as a business card, receipt, or magazine article, the Mobility is a great choice.(hp presario cq72 battery)

Design

The Portege R835 looks nearly identical to its predecessor, and we’re not complaining. The chassis is still made of magnesium alloy, complete with a handsome dark blue lid. Although they’re plastic, the chrome hinges are a nice accent, as are the smoky gray touchpad buttons. When we picked it up, the Portege R385 didn’t feel as sturdy as the aluminum MacBook Air or the Samsung Series 9 (which is made of even stronger duralumin), but this is still a fairly durable design for the money.( Dell Inspiron 1525 Battery)

As with the R700, the R835’s durability extends beyond its magnesium finish. Toshiba used a honeycomb rib structure for the base and palm rest for extra resilience. You also get hard drive protection and a spill-resistant keyboard.( Dell Inspiron 6400 Battery )

Weighing 3.2 pounds, the Portege R835 is one of the lightest laptops you’ll find with both a 13-inch display and a built-in DVD drive. While not as thin as ultraportables that eschew optical drives, the 0.7-1.1-inch profile makes this machine easy to slip into a bag. ( Dell Inspiron 1525 Battery)

Webcam and Face Recognition

According to our Skype video caller, the R835’s 0.3MP webcam delivered a bright and mostly clear picture. She also noted that the sound was plenty loud. You can also use this webcam with the built-in Face Recognition software. The system correctly identified our mug after a few minutes, but having to move our head around to log in was annoying. Keyboard and Touchpad

Because the keyboard sits between the space for the battery and the large touchpad, the keys on the Portege R835 aren’t quite as large as what you’ll find on competing ultraportables. They’re shorter than those on Toshiba’s own 13-inch T235, making the keyboard feel cramped.The keys also gave too little feedback when typing, which made it more difficult to tell when we’d successfully hit a target. Nevertheless, we acclimated to the layout in about 30 minutes and typed at our usual speed as we wrote this review. We’d really like to see Toshiba add a backlit keyboard, like on the Samsung Series 9.(dell vostro 1400 battery)

Two small dedicated buttons sit above the keyboard on the right side. One launches the Eco Utility for saving power, and the other engages Intel’s WiDi 2.0 technology for streaming video to a big-screen TV. (More on that technology below.) (VGP-BPS13)

Measuring 3.3 x 2 inches, the R835’s touchpad isn’t as ginormous as those on the Samsung Series 9 (3.9 x 2.7) or the 13-inch MacBook Air (4.3 x 3 inches), but it’s still plenty large for smooth navigation. With the older Portege R700, the cursor sometimes jumped around when our palm accidentally brushed up against the touchpad, but we didn’t experience that issue this machine.(VGP-BPS13A/Q)

In our tests, pinch-to-zoom and rotate gestures worked fine on the Portege R835. Plus, the Synaptics touchpad lets you perform neat tricks. We configured a three-finger press to launch Google Chrome and activated three-finger swiping (great for flicking through photos). Verdict

The $79 Duracell myGrid Charging Pad conveniently eliminates the clutter of having multiple chargers, but between the complicated setup Akku Vostro 1520 and long charge time, serious gadget freaks won’t be all that impressed.

Performance

On our tests, the myGrid Charging Pad took a long 5 hours Akku Vostro 1400 and 37 minutes to fully charge our completely drained HTC Evo Shift 4G. By contrast, we were able to do the same in a much shorter 3:38 using the phone’s standard HTC AC adapter
(from the same power outlet), and just 2:30 using the Powermat

Design

The myGrid Charging Pad from Duracell is essentially an ultra-thin square metal plate with a black cylinder running along one edge. At the base of the cylinder is the power cord, which plugs into an outlet. Meant primarily for desk duty, the entire setup measures 8.5 x 6.8 x 0.8 inches and weighs 4 ounces. Still, it’s not unreasonable to take the myGrid Charging Pad along on trips, considering it can charge up to four devices at once–sans wires.(Akku HP Pavilion DM4 )

Setting up phones to charge, however, is a little tricky. The Charging Pad comes with five different charging tips, two miniUSB and two microUSB (each set of opposing orientation), plus one proprietary Nokia connector. It’s not exactly an elegant arrangement, and the bulky clip detracts from a phone’s otherwise sleek design. That said, clips can be placed anywhere there’s room on the Charging Pad, and a magnetic clank along with a blue indicator light definitively lets you know you’re charging. Maybe it’s because of the new processor, but the R835 doesn’t get as warm as its predecessor. After playing Hulu at full screen for 15 minutes, the touchpad registered 86 degrees, the area between the G and H keys reached 88 degrees, and the bottom of the underside measured 96 degrees. The R700 was about as cool on top but reached 103 degrees on the bottom. The only spot where the R835 got slightly uncomfortable on our lap was the bottom-left side near the vent, which registered 102 after our Hulu test.(Akku thinkpad T60)
